Pot Limit Omaha Rules

In order for you to learn how to play pot limit Omaha you first have to know a few things such as how to determine the best hand at showdown, the order of play and also to include the cards dealt. Secondly, you would have to know the rules for pot limit betting. You also need to know how you can make a bet or raise and also to include what happens when you run out of chips (going all in).

In pot limit Omaha, the winner is the player who has the best 5 card poker hand constructed from any three cards of the community and any 2 of your 4 cards. The golden rule is ‘2 from your hand and 3 from the board’

Betting Proceeds

Just like the popular Texas Hold’em, pot limit Omaha is played with 2 blinds: the small blind and the big blind. These are two compulsory bets that have to be made by two players who are left to the dealer button and the small blind bet is half the total amount of the early bet required by the table and the big blind is the full amount of the early bet required by the table.

After the two compulsory bets have been made the players are dealt with four cards (hole cards) each face-down and the betting round commences in a clock wise direction with the player left to the player who had made the big blind.

In pot limit Omaha there is a minimum and maximum betting amount required on the table. The minimum bet is the size of the big blind and the maximum bet is the size of the current pot after any raise has been made.

When making a re-raise in pot limit games this means that you are only able to make a raise of the current pot size. For example, if the pot size is $15 this means you can only make a raise of $20. Any further raises would take your raise into account and this would mean that the next opponent is able to make a raise of $50 due to the fact that the current pot size is $35. The size of the pot grows gradually from one betting interval to the next.

After the pre-flop betting round is complete the flop is dealt (three community cards shown face-up on the table) and the game proceeds in a clockwise direction with the player of the small blind.

Raises can only be a maximum of the size of the current pot and players have the option to check, open, raise or call their bets. The betting round is completed when all players have reacted to their bets.

After the three cards have been dealt the forth card is dealt on the table and this is known as the turn and the fifth card is dealt on the table also known as the river. The action stats off with the active players left to the dealer button and after the river is completed players would have to show their cards and this is known as the showdown. The pot is awarded to the player with the best hand.

Due to the betting increases of one round to another a player can run out of chips and this is know as ‘all-in’. The pot becomes separated and players who wish to continue betting will form another pot known as a side pot and this side pot has got no interest to the all-in player. At showdown, the all-in player will only win cash in the main pot that s/he had contributed for.

Once you have understood the rules of the Pot Limit Omaha you then have to move on to the next step such as knowing the Best PLO starting hands and also to include the basic strategies.
